| Divorce Records - How to obtain a copy in the United States |
A divorce record or decree is a document that provides proof of the dissolution of a marriage. Access to divorce records differs by state; some states offer certified divorce decrees (which can be used for legal purposes) while others only offer only verification of a divorce.
Copies of divorce records and decrees are generally available at Vital Records offices at the state level, but often only at the city or county court where the final divorce decree was granted. Please note that some states are "open records" states which allow anyone to obtain divorce records, while others have more stringent access rights.
